2021 has had some of the greatest young MLB talent of all-time. Shohei Ohtani headlined the list of top players due to his unique ability as a two-way player who consistently achieved rare feats on a consistent basis. Ohtani deservedly was the unanimous choice for the title of the American League’s best player in the MVP award. The rise of “Shotime” has inspired the rise of two-way players in the MLB as players hope to maximize their career potential.

Ohtani overtook Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Marcus Semien, who were the runner ups in the AL MVP ballot. Any other year and Guerrero Jr. would have won the MVP with his outstanding offensive production, but Ohtani’s two-way “showcase” was too appealing. Future AL MVP races will be interesting if Shohei can repeat his 2021 and Vlad Jr. continues to improve. Despite neither superstar making the 2021 playoffs, the MLB can look forward to future contested races.
