The game of baseball is infamous among professional sports due to the length and occasional uneventfulness of its games. Several examples include a 26 inning 1-1 tie in 1920, a 24 inning 1-1 tie in 1945, and a 24 inning 1-0 victory for the Houston Astros over the New York Mets. The game that occurred on this day in sports history during July of 1909 did not reach such lengths as those mentioned but provided a historical moment of its own.

THE LONGEST SCORELESS GAME IN AL HISTORY TOOK PLACE

Today, baseball fans are reminded of the 18-inning performance of Detroit Tigers pitcher Ed Summers. He faced 63 batters, allowing nine to get on base off seven hits and two BBs, en route to a notorious no-decision. The Senators played two pitchers that day, Dolly Gray for eight innings and Bob Groom for 10. They combined for six hits allowed and 7 BBs. The outing went down as the longest scoreless game in the history of the American League.
