Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews were both renowned for their hitting ability. Aaron in particular reached the heights of legends as he went on to pass Babe Ruth as the home run leader before being passed himself by Barry Bonds in 2007. On this day in MLB history, both Aaron and Mathews joined the 500-home run club. They did so in different years, 1967 and 1968 respectively but both did it against the same team in the San Francisco Giants.

HANK AARON AND EDDIE MATHEWS JOINED THE 500-HOME RUN CLUB

Aaron and Mathews were teammates with the Braves between the years 1954 and 1966. They won two World Series’ together and appeared side by side in eleven All-Star Games. They had split apart by the time they reached the 500-home run mark. Mathews was the first third baseman ever to accomplish the feat, doing so in 1967 during his single-season run with the Houston Astros against hall of fame pitcher Juan Marichal.

Aaron followed close behind exactly one year later to the day with his 500th. Both players rank within the top 25 all-time in home runs recorded. Mathews ranks 23rd with 512 and Aaron holds the second place title with 755. Aaron was the first player to ever record 500 home runs and 3,000 hits in his career.
