The New York Yankees are without a doubt among the most iconic American professional sports franchises in the entire world. They produced such icons as Babe RuthLou GehrigMickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio, and won an MLB record 27 World Series. Despite their historic players and success, it took nearly a century for a single Yankee to be inducted into the 3,000 Hit Club. The franchises’ first member joined in iconic fashion OTD in 2011.

Derek Jeter, a future Hall of Famer and 11-time All-Star at the time, earned the honor in 2011 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He entered the game with 2,998 career hits. Hit 2,999th was a base hit to left field in the first inning. Number 3,000 came in the third, a full-count home run to tie the game. This secured his membership to one of the professional sports’ most exclusive clubs. He would be joined by his teammate Alex Rodriguez in 2015 off a solo homer of his own.
