Sunday night marked the end of a thrilling AL Wild Card race that was ultimately decided on the last day of the season in favor of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. At the forefront of the action stood Rafael Devers, as he helped the Red Sox pull off a 4-run comeback win over the Nationals and clinch the first AL Wild Card spot with a clutch 9th inning, game-winning home run. This capped off an impressive season by the Dominican 3rd Baseman, in which he totaled 38 home runs and 113 RBI.

Nothing illustrates Rafael Devers’ career in Boston better than his Wild-Card-clinching home run against the Nationals. After making his debut in the 2017 season, Devers continued to improve and solidify his role on the Red Sox roster. By the start of the 2021 season, he had already received MVP votes after a phenomenal 2019 campaign and helped his franchise win a World Series.

The 2021 season would produce similar results, as he led the 92-win Red Sox in both RBI and home runs, and has now surpassed his own record for the most HR during a season by a third baseman. As a result, despite the Boston Red Sox franchise having a rich history boasting many baseball legends, Devers’ recent performances make him already the best power-hitting third baseman in Red Sox history and he has a great chance to surpass Wade Boggs overall.
