1989: Basketball’s international governing body, FIBA, voted to drop restrictions on professional players, thus allowing NBA players to compete at the Olympics

1989: Utah Jazz PG John Stockton became the 1st player to record 1,000+ assists during consecutive seasons in NBA history. The HOF stretched that streak to 5 straight and 7 overall while no other player has ever recorded more than 1 such season

1987: Atlanta Braves P Rick Mahler set an NL record by pitching his 3rd career Opening Day shutout

1986: Boston Red Sox 1B Dwight Evans hit a HR on the very 1st pitch of the entire MLB season, the 1st and only time that had ever happened in MLB history until Chicago Cubs OF Ian Happ did it in 2018. However, the Detroit Tigers came away victorious 6-5

1970: 5 years after the Braves left for Atlanta, the MLB returned to Wisconsin as the Milwaukee Brewers (formerly Seattle Pilots) debuted with a 12-0 loss to the California Angels
