1983: Houston Astros SP Nolan Ryan passed Walter Johnson (3,509) as the MLB’s all-time Strikeouts leader. Ryan finished with 5,714 career Ks which is almost 1,000 more than any other player in history

1961: Canton, OH was chosen by the NFL to be the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame

1950: Boston Celtics hired 32-year-old Arnold “Red” Auerbach as HC after his 4 seasons with the Capitol Bullets and Tri-State Blackhawks. Auerbach cemented himself as 1 of the greatest Coaches ever as he would go on to win 9 Championships in 16 seasons

1918: Entering the game on 9-0 and 0-9 starts to the season, respectively, the New York Giants’ streak was snapped by the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose winless start had set an MLB record
