On a night with multiple 3-HR nights, Byron Buxton brought one bomb back in the building. The Giants lit up the Rockies for an astounding 23 runs and 27 hits while the Rangers and Astros went to extra innings where Texas made all the right plays to win the game. Add some diving grabs, clutch dingers, and a phenomenal pitching performance, and the first day of September was an excellent day for baseball.

Very few players in baseball are as talented as Byron Buxton. The former No. 2 overall pick has all five tools a ball player can have. His best tool is his speed, which is rated about a 99 on MLB: The Show, but his glove is right up there as he can make diving catches, cover ground few other outfielders can, and bring back dingers to the dismay of the batter.

Buxton also drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning which proved to be the game-winner, ending the Twins’ six-game losing streak as they compete with Chicago (and Cleveland) for the AL Central division title.

Alex Dickerson was the first Player of the Day during the month of September in 2020 as he blasted three HRs and tied the MLB record with five extra-base hits. He wasn’t the only guy with three bombs though as Marcell Ozuna made his own history on Tuesday night with this trifecta in Fenway Park.

Besides Buxton, the three best defensive plays came from outfielders Mike Yastrzemski, Clint Frazier, and Ian Happ who all made excellent diving grabs in the grass.

With the game all tied up in the 8th inning, the team from South Beach needed someone to step up against the team that plays north of the border. Who better to be the guy than newly acquired Starling Marte who acquainted himself quite well in Miami with this stellar shot.

What a time for Ke’Bryan Hayes to hit his first career home run than with the game-tying shot in the 8th inning to push the Cubs to extras. The top prospect has all the makings of a future All-Star in the Steel City.

The Astros looked like they were going to pick up their 13th win in 17 games, but many players on the Rangers stepped up with some clutch plays in every facet of the game: defensively, offensively, and on the base paths. Much credit has to go to Texas’ coaching staff who pushed all the right buttons in extra innings including the balk bate and the bunt call which led to the runs they needed to claim the win.

The best pitching performance of September so far goes to Aaron Nola who went eight innings, giving up only two hits and zero runs while racking up 9 Ks to lead Philly past the reigning champs.

Full game highlights of today’s close games will be posted here once they conclude.
