In Thursday night’s slate of seven games, road teams won four of them in a total of three overtimes. In a double overtime thriller, Atlanta outlasted San Antonio, as they kept their playoff hopes alive thank to Trae Young’s 15 combined OT points. Orlando was able to get past the disappointing Pelicans in overtime after crucial errors from Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

Victor Oladipo made his debut for Miami, and helped the Heat defeat Golden State at home. With five players in double figures, Denver was able to top the LA Clippers on the road behind 23 points from Jamal Murray, who came up big late. LaMarcus Aldridge put on a Brooklyn Nets jersey for the first time and stuffed the stat sheet in a variety of ways. The Nets started the game off hot and never looked back in a beating over Charlotte.

Philly, still without Joel Embiid, was able to demolish Cleveland on the road with an impressive night from Shake Milton, who had 27 points on 10/14 shooting as the 76ers continue to keep it rolling without their best player. Bradley Beal watched his Washington team get blown out on the road to Detroit from the sidelines as his backcourt mate Russell Westbrook keeps racking up the triple-doubles.

Here are the best NBA highlights, facts, performers, and takeaways from April 1st, 2021:

NEW ORLEANS PELICANS HAVE FAILED TO LIVE UP TO THE HYPE THUS FAR

The New Orleans Pelicans squad currently sits in 12th place in the Western Conference standings. This is a team who is not living up to the expectations they had entering the season. A loss on Thursday night to a weaker Orlando team adds to the disappointment they’ve had in 2020-21. 1.5 games behind the 10th place play-in spot was not where this team pictured themselves being with over 50 games in the books.

This NOLA roster is not one that lacks talent by any means. The Pelicans are composed of players like Zion Williamson, who is averaging 26.4 points per game, Brandon Ingram at 23.8 points per game, Lonzo Ball, Steven Adams, Josh Hart, and Eric Bledsoe, who are all above-average NBA players. This roster is very capable of making the playoffs, and should be expected to, considering their star talent and quality depth.

Williamson is in the top-10 in PPG this season, and for a player of his caliber to not even make the play-in game would be disappointing for his young career and not ideal for the NBA either. Their loss to Orlando was just one of the many discouraging losses this team has had this season, as it has been a recurring issue.

Their consistent lack of defense makes it seem like there doesn’t appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel for this season’s chances. Something needs to change for this program to turn it around and make the play-in tournament, setting the tone for what could be a very promising 2020s decade.
