John Elway was one of the greatest NFL Draft QB prospects ever as the clear-cut No.1 selection in the 1983 draft despite a stacked class that also included Dan Marino and Jim Kelly. The only problem was he had no intention of ever playing for an east coast team like the Baltimore Colts, so the Colts traded the No.1 overall pick to Denver less than a week after the draft for three players that never matched the career accomplishments of John Elway.

After nearly two decades of dominance, Elway called it a career from the top of the mountain after winning two consecutive Super Bowls in his final two seasons to conclude a career that includes a plethora of franchise records, an MVP season, and one of the greatest overall resumes by a Quarterback in the history of the game.

  • 9x Pro Bowl, 3x 2nd Team All-Pro, 1987 NFL MVP, 2x AFC OPOY, 2x Super Bowl Champ, Super Bowl 33 MVP
  • 1993 NFL PASS YDS & CMP Leader, 1990s All-Decade Team, #7 retired by Broncos
  • DEN career records: PASS YDS (51,475), PASS TD (300), QB WINS (148), Pro Bowls (9), GP (234), CMP (4,123), GWD (40), PASS ATT (7,250), Total YDS (54,882) & TD (334); Playoff PASS YDS (4,964), TD (27), & Wins (12)
  • Most career PASS YDS in DEN history: 1. John Elway (51,475), 2. Peyton Manning (17,112), 3. Craig Morton (11,895)
  • Most career PASS TD in DEN history: 1. John Elway (300), 2. Peyton Manning (140), 3. Craig Morton (74)

JOHN ELWAY WAS THE GREATEST DENVER BRONCOS PLAYER OF ALL-TIME

When people discuss the greatest players to ever wear a Denver Broncos uniform, names like Terrell DavisShannon Sharpe, and Von Miller more recently will likely be brought up. However, no such discussion can take place without John Elway first coming to mind. The Stanford alum had a lot of hype entering the NFL as the leader of the legendary 1983 draft class, yet the 9x Pro Bowler more than lived up to the hype.

The resume speaks for itself: 9x Pro Bowl, 3x 2nd Team All-Pro, 1987 NFL MVP, 2x AFC OPOY, 2x Super Bowl Champ, Super Bowl 33 MVP. Not to mention he’s BY FAR the all-time leader in PASS YDS and PASS TD in franchise history with 2x more than any other player in either category.

Elway’s unprecedented reign as the Broncos leader was always surrounded by talk of having no Super Bowl titles until he rewrote his legacy by concluding the final two seasons of his illustrious career with consecutive championships to end his HOF career on a high note that solidified him as not only the greatest Broncos player ever but also one of the best quarterbacks to ever live as well.
