A day of great significance for a number of legends, November 8th is also known for some more dubious feats as well. The day that the ageless Frank Robinson was awarded his historic MVP, Emmitt Smith also cemented his legacy among the greatest rushers in history as a young Elgin Baylor set an NBA single-game scoring record. Not to mention a record 7 INTs were tossed and the Kings finally ended an incredible streak.

1st AL & NL MVP

YEAR: 1966

SIGNIFICANCE: Frank Robinson became the 1st and only player in MLB history to win the MVP award in both leagues

54 years ago today, Frank Robinson became the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the Most Valuable Player award in both the National League and American League. He first won the NL MVP in 1961 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, and then repeated that feat with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. Robinson’s ’66 campaign made even more history with him becoming the 15th player in baseball history to win the Triple Crown (.316, 49 HR, 122 RBI) as well.

The 1982 Hall of Fame inductee had one of the most decorated careers in MLB history; leaving his legacy with 586 HR and 2,943 hits, and claiming almost every attainable award; a Rookie of the Year, 2x MVP, Gold Glove, Batting Title, WS MVP, 14x All-Star, and AS MVP. After his playing career, Robinson took the job as the Cleveland Indians player/manager, becoming the first Black manager in baseball history. In 1989, he was named AL Manager of the Year. Without a doubt, Mr. Robinson was one of the greatest and historic players in the history of the sport.

Emmitt's DAL Record

YEAR: 1998

SIGNIFICANCE: Emmitt Smith reached 12,000 rushing yards and set the Cowboys’ franchise record

A 3x Super Bowl Champion and former MVP (1993), Emmitt Smith was well on his way to Canton by age 29. In the midst of a 1,300-yard, 13-TD season, Smith rushed for 163 yards in a victory over the New York Giants on this date in 1998 to bring Dallas’ record to 6-3. More interestingly, Emmitt not only became just the sixth player to break 12,000 career rushing yards, but he also passed Tony Dorsett to become the Cowboys’ all-time leading rusher (12,036).

Though Dallas would finish the season at 10-6 and win the NFC East, they would fall to Arizona 20-7 in the Wild Card round as the offense sputtered to just 260 total yards. After missing the playoffs at 8-8 the next season, the last three years of Emmitt’s illustrious Cowboy career would yield just 15 total wins. Finishing his 15-year career after two seasons as a Cardinal in 2004, Emmitt Smith’s NFL-record would finalize at 18,355 career rushing yards.

Early Points Record

YEAR: 1959

SIGNIFICANCE: Elgin Baylor set a new NBA record with a 64-point game (3 years before Wilt’s 100-point game)

After Elgin Baylor’s Rookie of the Year campaign the season before, the Lakers struggled to begin their final year in Minneapolis, sputtering to a 2-6 record. Having already scored 52 in the first game of the season, however, Baylor took it to a new level in the ninth game — a 136-115 victory over the Boston Celtics. The Lakers’ first win against the Celtics in three years (22 consecutive losses), Elgin Baylor also set a then-record with 64 points in the game on 25-47 FG shooting, breaking the previous record of 63 (Joe Fulks, 1949). Registering a double-double with 17 rebounds to go along with the historic scoring output, Baylor remains one of just two players in NBA history to record multiple 60-point, 15-rebound games along with Wilt Chamberlain.

NFL-Record INTs

YEAR: 1942

SIGNIFICANCE: Parker Hall threw a NFL record 7 INTs in 1 game against the Packers

Beginning play in 1936 with the second version of the American Football League, the Cleveland Rams moved over to the NFL after just one season where they could have hosted a championship had the Boston Shamrocks’ unpaid players agreed to participate. By their fifth year in the NFL, the Rams had yet to finish with a winning record before suspending operations the next year due to World War II.

With the NFL dealing with plenty of adversity off the field, some occurred on the field during November 8th of 1942, where fourth-year passer Parker Hall tossed an NFL-record 7 INTs and just 96 yards in a loss to the Green Bay Packers (stood until 1950). Surprisingly, Hall threw just 19 picks on the season but only 7 TDs while leading the Rams to their best finish — a third-place, 5-6 season.

Kings Snap Streak

YEAR: 1992

SIGNIFICANCE: Sacramento Kings finally defeated the Lakers after 43 consecutive losses in LA

Long before the Kings became the Lakers’ neighbors in Northern California, the latter had long dominated the all-time series. Along with a 277-157 record between each variation of the franchises, the Lakers have had multiple 10+ game winning streaks against the Kings throughout the years, including 17 straight between 1989 and 1992.

All the way back on March 28th, 1975, however, the Lakers began in unimaginable home winning streak with an 11-point victory over the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. The Lakers would win each and every home game in the series until this date in 1992, when the Sacramento Kings finally won in LA for the first time in 44 attempts led by HOFer Mitch Richmond’s 29 points and Wayman Tisdale’s 25-point double-double.
