Each day in history is uniquely outlined by accolades and milestones achieved by individuals and franchises in pro sports. September 15th is no different, however there are some incredibly notable events that stand out. One of the greatest to ever pitch a baseball set a massive single-game record just over half a century ago. On top of that, sets of brothers took the field on two different occasions and showed the power of family within the MLB. The events that occurred on 9/15 are quite likely never to be replicated again.

Carlton Ks 19 Mets

YEAR: 1969

SIGNIFICANCE: Steve Carlton struck out 19 Mets to set a new MLB single-game record

St Louis Cardinals SP Steve Carlton set a new single-game record when he struck out 19 New York Mets on this day in 1969. Carlton pitched nine innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and walking two, alongside the 19 punch outs. He ended up getting the loss in a 4-3 affair after allowing two different two-run home runs to Ron Swoboda, with the decisive one coming in the eighth inning. Carlton’s record was matched twice by Tom Seaver (1970) and Nolan Ryan (1974) before Roger Clemens struck out 20 in 1986.

Brothers in the Outfield

YEARS: 1938 & 1963

SIGNIFICANCE: 1st pair of brothers to hit back-to-back HRs (Waner bros) & 1st all-brother trio in the OF together (Alou bros)

On this day in 1938, brothers Lloyd and Paul Waner hit back-to-back home runs, becoming the first ever siblings to do so in MLB history. In the top of the fifth inning, Lloyd hit a two-run bomb to deep right field, which was followed by another dinger to deep right field from Paul. This same feat happened in 2013 for the second and last time, when Justin Upton and Melvin Upton Jr. went deep in successive at bats.

Exactly 25 years after the Waner brothers went deep, the Alou brothers (Felipe, Matty, and Jesus) played in the outfield together at the same time. The San Francisco Giants played the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field, a game that saw the Giants win 13-5. Felipe started the game in RF and led off, before eventually moving around and playing all three OF positions. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jesus replaced Willie McCovey to play LF, and Matty Alou entered the game in the eighth inning in place of CF Willie Mays, making history in the process.

2 Franchise Leaders

YEAR: 2019

SIGNIFICANCE: WR Julio Jones and QB Derek Carr became the yards leaders in their positions in franchise history

In a close Sunday Night Football match up against the Philadelphia Eagles, Julio Jones closed the game as the all-time receiving leader in Atlanta Falcons franchise history. On a fourth down with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Atlanta relied on a usual hero in Julio Jones as he took a screen pass 54 yards to the house. In doing so, Jones passed Roddy White’s previous franchise record in style with 10,868 receiving yards for the Atlanta Falcons.

On the same exact day, Oakland found a new franchise leader at the Quarterback position in Derek Carr. However, it was not the brightest of showings, with 198 yards, a touchdown, and two picks in a big loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. On the flip side, it was just enough to solidify his name at the top of the Raiders record books with plenty of time to stretch the gap. Raiders fans currently have plenty to be excited about as Las Vegas has a premier weapon in Henry Ruggs as well as an extremely talented backfield in Josh Jacobs to help Carr continue to put up historic numbers for the Raiders franchise.

YEAR: 1912

SIGNIFICANCE: Joe Wood earned his 16th consecutive victory, tying Walter Johnson’s MLB record

Smoky Joe Wood won his 16th consecutive start 108 years ago, tying Walter Johnson’s record. Wood’s streak lasted from July 8 to September 15; a span that saw him go 16-0 with one save and a microscopic 0.12 ERA in 145.2 IP. It was an absolutely crazy stretch for the right-hander, who saw his streak end on September 20th against the Tigers. In 1912, Wood finished in fifth place in the MVP voting, after recording a league-leading 34 wins, 35 complete games, and 10 shutouts. Smoky Joe also finished with a 1.91 ERA in 344 innings. The longest win streak now belongs to Carl Hubbel, who won a record 24 straight games from July 1936-May 1937.

Bonds' 2,063rd Walk

YEAR: 2003

SIGNIFICANCE: Barry Bonds earned his 2,063rd career walk, moving to 2nd all-time

With two walks in his last two at-bats (one being intentional) San Francisco Giants OF Barry Bonds passed Babe Ruth to move up to second place on the all-time walks list, behind only Rickey Henderson. After the game, Bonds found himself with 2,063 career walks, 127 less than the leading Henderson, who had recorded the last walk of his career on August 29th. Bonds would go on to break the record the following season on July 4th.
