The accolades and milestones accomplished each day in sports represent remarkable pieces of history never to be forgotten. September 2nd holds its fair share, as it is the home to multiple extraordinary achievements in all of sports. To begin, the Astros and Cubs battled it out in an intense match-up which set the record for the most used-players in a game. In addition, Mike Greenwall set a unique individual MLB benchmark. The achievements of players from the past continue to influence the game each day.

Cubs, 'Stros Use 53 Players

YEAR: 1986

SIGNIFICANCE: The Astros and Cubs combined to use a record 53 players in 1 game

34 years ago, the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs played one of the most weird baseball games in recent memory, due to the length of the game and some of the players involved. In this game, both teams combined to use 53 players, an MLB record at the time. On September 2nd, the teams played 14 innings, but the game was suspended in the top of the 15th and was resumed the very next day. Initially, Astros SP Nolan Ryan, one of the greatest pitchers of all time, faced off against the Cubs SP Jamie Moyer, who pitched well into his 40s and finished his career in 2012.

The very next day, in the 17th inning the Astros scored three runs off the Cubs’ Dave Gumbert. The Cubs then responded with three runs in the bottom half, thanks to a 3-run HR by Keith Moreland. Two batters later, Shawon Dunston singled and was pinch-ran for by a rookie pitcher making his Major League debut. His name? Greg Maddux. In the 18th inning, Maddux allowed one run and ended up taking the loss in this historic battle.

9 RBI Game

YEAR: 1996

SIGNIFICANCE: Mike Greenwell set an MLB record by driving in all 9 runs in a game

On this day in 1996, Boston LF Mike Greenwell drove in all of the Red Sox nine runs in a 9-8 win over the Seattle Mariners at the Kingdome. Greenwell was hitting eighth and went 4-for-5 with 9 RBIs. Greenwell homered twice and hit a double, before getting the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th inning. Greenwell set an MLB record that night by becoming the first player ever to have nine RBIs in a single game. 1996 was Greenwell’s last season in the majors, so he began his last month in baseball with an exclamation point. This game was the highlight of what was a .366/.407/.962 September; pretty solid way to exit.

Stieb Throws No-No

YEAR: 1990

SIGNIFICANCE: Dave Stieb threw the 1st no-hitter in Toronto Blue Jays history

Long-time Toronto Blue Jays SP Dave Stieb threw the first no-hitter in Jays history on this day 30 years ago. Stieb walked four and struck out nine against the Cleveland Indians while throwing 123 pitches (Fun fact, Stieb’s opposing pitcher that day was current Colorado Rockies’ Manager Bud Black). This no-hitter was the highlight of Stieb’s 1990 season, which was actually one of his best years, finishing the year 18-6 with a 2.93 ERA. Stieb pitched 15 seasons with the Blue Jays, and ended with a 175-134 record to pair alongside a 3.44 ERA in Toronto.

Yanks' Shutout Streak Ends

YEAR: 2019

SIGNIFICANCE: The Yankees were shut out for the 1st time in 220 games, the 2nd longest streak in MLB history

One year ago, the Texas Rangers came into the Bronx and ended the Yankees 220-game streak of scoring at least one run. The Yanks’ streak is the second longest scoring streak in MLB history, trailing only the 1931-33 Yankees (303 games). Mike Minor pitched 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out five as well. He was followed by relief pitchers Shawn Kelley and Emmanuel Clase who closed it down, throwing the last 1.2 shutout innings. The Rangers won the game 7-0 and it took the Yankees just 20 games to get shut out again when they lost to the Rays 4-0 on September 25th.

The Birth of a Franchise

YEAR: 1966

SIGNIFICANCE: The Miami Dolphins played their 1st ever regular season game

Pushing half a century ago, the AFL expanded with the addition of two teams. One of the two teams was the Miami Dolphins, officially entering its inaugural year of the franchise. On September 2nd, 1966 the Miami Dolphins played their first ever regular season game. In addition, RB Joe Auer returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD.

Unfortunately for Miami, the sweet start turned sour as they lost to the Oakland Raiders 23-14 at the Orange Bowl. On a brighter note, Auer was the team’s leading scorer, as well as the MVP for the Dolphins in their first ever season. They went on to have an undefeated season just six years later in 1972 under the legendary HC Don Shula.
