Jackie Robinson Day is annually celebrated on April 15th, the anniversary of his MLB debut when he broke the color barrier in 1947. However, baseball obviously wasn’t played in April and so Major League Baseball rightfully re-scheduled it to August 28th. What a day it was as FOUR teams walked off the field celebrating a game-winning HR while some phenomenal pitching performances contributed to an entertaining day for America’s pastime.

Because of a rain delay previously, the Mets were considered the home team for a game in Yankee Stadium and took advantage of hitting last, as Amed Rosario made sure he would be the last hitter of the night.

In Game 1 of the double-header, the Mets were trailing by three runs with only two innings left. That was until Pete Alonso stepped up as the potential tying run and turned that potential into power before Dom Smith represented the honorable #42 as well as any by taking the lead in the same very inning.

On a night that will be remembered for the death of Chadwick Boseman who famously portrayed King T’Challa in “The Black Panther,” Scott KINGery lived up to the name with this walk-off HR against the Braves.

Randal Grichuk’s stats on Friday night weren’t anything special: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 R, but those two RBI’s and one run were monumental in the Blue Jays go-ahead extra innings victory over the Orioles. The heroic Blue Jay also added an incredible diving grab in center field as the cherry on top of a big night.

On a night full of walk-off HRs, Yasmani Grandal was part of the entertaining events as he stroked this 2-1 offering to send the White Sox home happy.

Jorge Mateo is one of the fastest players in the league and showcased his world-class speed on Friday with this diving catch to rob Nolan Arenado of a base hit.

Under the bright lights on Friday night during Jackie Robinson Day, these three starters were sensational. Max Scherzer entered the top-5 of all-time double-digit strikeout games while Sixto Sanchez blanked the third best team in the league during only his second career start. Can’t forget Tyler Mahle who racked up a whopping 11 Ks on the day.

An unorthodox 3-2-8 double play was also a part of Jackie Robinson Day as Yadier Molina was mostly responsible for the unique circumstance that caught a couple runners in no mans land to help neutralize the damage in the second inning before it got completely out of hand. The Indians still beat the Cards.. by a lot.

These plays at the hot corner looked easy but were actually extremely difficult. Credit to Brian Anderson and Maikel Franco for getting it done across the diamond.

Jackie Robinson is one of the greatest players in sports history. Not necessarily because of his on-field contributions or historic records (which he has as well), but mainly for doing something nobody ever did before by becoming the first player of color to partake in professional sports. No black athlete had it tougher than Jackie and because he paved the way, so many athletes are now accepted into the great game of America’s pastime. This day was all about honoring #42.
