LB Zach Thomas was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round (154th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. His career got off to a fast start, as he started all 16 games his rookie year en route to earning All-Rookie honors and being named a Pro Bowl alternate. Although he did not play for a perennial Super Bowl contender during his 13-year career, Thomas was a top defensive starter for Miami and far exceeded his draft position, further cementing himself as the greatest linebacker in Dolphins history.

NO LINEBACKER IN MIAMI DOLPHINS HISTORY COMES CLOSE TO ZACH THOMAS

Zach Thomas was originally brought into Miami to contribute on special teams, as he wasn’t deemed athletic enough to compete at the professional level after a poor performance at the NFL Combine. He quickly proved the scouts wrong and had a phenomenal rookie season in which he recorded over 150 combined tackles and won AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Thomas would go on to start every single game he played throughout his 12 years in a Dolphins uniform.

The Texas Tech product had a tough road to notoriety in a draft class that included the likes of Ray Lewis and Tedy Bruschi, but his toughness and consistency proved that he belonged among the best of the best, with the accolades to show for it. He was named to seven Pro Bowls over the course of his career, and he also earned five 1st-Team All-Pro honors. Thomas far exceeded expectations and made a name for himself among the great Dolphins defenders as the best linebacker in franchise history.
