A professional athlete’s debut can be a nerve-racking experience. Coming before the fans for the first time to face off against proven opponents that want to win as much as they do, and especially for a baseball pitcher, there is a feeling of being alone on an island. Not everybody is up to the task, but in 1960, Juan Marichal showed the world he was more than ready for the bright lights by dominating his first big league game at a historic level that set the tone for a Hall of Fame career.

  • Juan Marichal pitched a 1-hit, complete shutout for a 2-0 victory during his MLB debut for the Giants on July 19, 1960
  • Marichal and Warren Spahn dueled for a whole 15 innings in the longest game in NL history
  • The 10x All-Star was inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the 1983 class (retired after 1975)

HOF SP JUAN MARICHAL MADE HIS MLB DEBUT WITH A 1-HITTER

Juan Marichal made his MLB debut for the San Francisco Giants against the Philadelphia Phillies. He showcased his flaming fastball and jaw-dropping curve by fanning 12 of his first 30 batters over nine unforgettable innings during a memorable debut. He absolutely dominated, allowing only two players to reach first base, with one walk and one hit over nine shutout innings for a 2-0 Giants win.

The 10x All-Star would continue to paint the corners over his 16-year career, accruing 243 wins and 2,303 strikeouts with a terrific 2.89 ERA. Marichal joined baseball legends soon after his retirement, entering the HOF with the class of 1983 after retiring in 1975.
