An impressive record cemented into history on this day was Mike Marshall‘s 13th consecutive relief appearance. The Dodgers RP is among the few relievers ever to receive a Cy Young award, as he pitched over 1,300 innings in his career with a 3.14 ERA. Marshall racked up two All-Star appearances and also holds the MLB record for games pitched in a season (106) and relief IP in a season (208) in 1974, his Cy Young Award-winning year.

Marshall became a controversial figure in his own time as a staunch and vocal advocate on behalf of the players. He had a PhD in exercise physiology and used his knowledge to develop pitching styles focused on injury prevention. The sturdiness he achieved from his research earned him the nickname “Iron Mike” and no doubt contributed to his ability to pitch as often as he did during a historic 1974 season to become the first Relief Pitcher to win a Cy Young award in MLB history.
