This day in 1983, the Texas Rangers set an MLB record for most runs scored in a single extra inning. The Oakland Athletics battled the Rangers through 14 hard-fought innings only to give up 12 runs in the 15th for a 16-4 loss, among the worst defeats in the history of Major League Baseball. The onslaught began with a double by Bob Jones that scored two runs. Jones went on to hit another double later in the inning to push their lead to 11.
Surprisingly no home runs were scored through the duration of an offensive display made up entirely of singles, doubles, and errors. Despite pitching only two of the 15 innings, Athletics pitcher Dave Beard was awarded the loss. Both AL West rivals ended up finishing the season slightly below .500 in another disappointing campaign for both franchises but this game will always be remembered in their franchise’s history.
