The Chicago Cubs and White Sox entered the 2017 MLB season in two opposite boats. The Cubs had just ended a centuries-long championship drought unlike anything in professional sports after winning the 2016 World Series. They started the following season slow, hovering around a .500 record until a mid-July trade with the White Sox, who had been out of playoff contention since 2008. The Cubs made a big move by acquiring SP Jose Quintana for Matt RoseBryant Flete, and top prospects Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease

  • Cubs acquired Jose Quintana from the White Sox for four prospects including Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease on July 13, 2017
  • Eloy Jimenez won a Silver Slugger in just his 2nd career season at 23 years old in 2020
  • Dylan Cease graduated the minor league system as a top-25 prospect, according to MLB.com in 2019

A CHICAGO-CHICAGO BLOCKBUSTER HAD MAJOR RIPPLE EFFECTS FOR YEARS TO COME

Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Chase both began their careers in 2019, two years following the trade. Their presence provided the White Sox with a foundation to build up their future after a decade-long playoff drought. They finally reached the postseason in 2020, falling to the Oakland Athletics in the 2-1 in the American League Wild Card series, and appear to be well on their way to have a longstanding presence.

On the other side of the trade, Jose Quintana helped the Chicago Cubs secure the three-seed in the 2017 playoffs. They fought their way to the NLCS but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Quintana was consistently above-average but never recaptured his Cy Young-caliber stuff that he had in 2016 pre-trade. After three and a half years with the Cubs, Quintana departed in free agency, signing with the Los Angeles Angels making the White Sox clear winners of the Chicago-Chicago blockbuster deal.
