MLB catchers are mostly known for their critical role in a team’s defensive execution, but many have been known to have a high impact on the offensive end as well. Mike Piazza, for example, almost ranks top 50 in home runs scored all-time, just behind Cal Ripken Jr. despite having to manage a pitching staff as well. On this day in 2019, Rays C Travis d’Arnaud pulled off his own impressive HR feat as he almost joined the exclusive group of players to hit four homers in one game as leadoff hitter behind the plate.

  • Travis d’Arnaud is the 1st (and only) Catcher to hit 3 HRs during 1 GP while batting leadoff on July 15, 2019
  • D’Arnaud capped off the historic game with a 3-run go-ahead HR in the 9th inning off Aroldis Chapman
  • The Rays Catcher collected all 5 of Tampa’s RBIs in the 5-4 win over their AL East rival in New York

TRAVIS D’ARNAUD’S HISTORIC GAME WAS CAPPED OFF WITH A GW-HR

D’Arnaud was among the league’s best offensive players at the catcher position, a fact solidified by winning the Silver Slugger award in 2020. His talent earned him a spot in history the season prior during a 5-4 victory over his team’s divisional rival New York Yankees. He became the first-ever catcher to record three home runs as the leadoff hitter. He accounted for all five of Tampa’s RBIs, including a go-ahead three-run homer against All-Star and World Series Champion Aroldis Chapman
