PATRICK MAHOMES IS NO LONGER THE UNANIMOUS BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL
COLORS KEY | FULL CHIEFS OUTLOOK
It is very obvious early on in the season that the Kansas City Chiefs do not look like themselves. Their high-powered offense looks lost when defenses are able to contain big plays from Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes has been turning the ball over far too much. That is not to say that Mahomes is not an elite quarterback anymore, but there are enough elite quarterbacks in the AFC that it creates a legitimate conversation for who’s the absolute best right now.
In addition to getting pushed by Baker Mayfield and suffering his first career loss against Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes has seen both Josh Allen and Justin Herbert not only go to Arrowhead Stadium and beat him, but outplay him as well. A big reason for Mahomes’ success the past three seasons has been in large part to limiting turnovers while trying to create big plays. So far this season, the Chiefs are not making those plays as often, and some of those risks are resulting in bad turnovers.
Granted, his talent is undeniable, and it has been enough to be the best quarterback in the league the past few seasons. However, until he starts to limit his turnovers and sharpen his play again, Patrick Mahomes cannot be considered the UNANIMOUS best quarterback in the NFL at this time, especially not with these aforementioned AFC quarterbacks, along with Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Kyler Murray all playing at elite levels to start the season.
Recently speaking, a lot of factors contributed to what could be considered a fluke Chiefs loss to the Bills in Week 5. There were numerous questionable calls (on both sides), a lengthy weather delay, a couple turnovers due to the rain, and key injuries to Chris Jones and Clyde Edwards-Helaire that are unlikely to be repeated. However, the Bills proved they are the best team in the AFC right now, and this statement win puts them in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the AFC with arguably the NFL’s best QB.
