If you hope to continue to play sports during this time of Covid-19, it’s important to understand a few simple principles that can help you stay healthy. It’s true that we’ve seen amazing efforts take place in a range of sports leagues over the last seven months, such as the NBA conquering Covid as much as it can to keep games together and their players safe.

We’ve also seen stadiums filled with cardboard cutouts of people, televised leagues becoming the norm, and more. But what if you actually wish to play sports with your friends and aren’t so sure how to stay safe? It’s important to not only take care of yourself in this context, but with other people as well. No matter what your opinions on this are, it’s true that taking the best precautions possible will prevent games from being suspended and locked down in the future. Sports are too important for us to go another stretch without it.

Let’s consider, then, a few principles that can help you through this period:

There are plenty of excellent non-contact sports out there that you could engage in. For instance, finding out the playing time for 9 holes of golf can help you plan an afternoon at the course with your best buds, renting out some clubs and spending time on the green. Racquet sports such as tennis and badminton are great, provided you play in singles. Working out using the high jump, track, and facilities at your local gym might be a great place to stay in shape and compete with yourself. This is a great place to start, with many other non-contact sports becoming more popular during this time.

Don’t forget to take the right precautions if you are able to. It’s important to protect yourself. Wearing a mask while playing a tennis match might not be a good idea, particularly if you’re someone who believes breathing clearly when under physical stress is a good idea. However, you can bring antibacterial wipes to wipe down your equipment, ensure you socially distance, and using hand sanitizer to keep your hands disinfected throughout the day. Common-sense wisdom and good personal hygiene will always help.

It’s important to understand the protocols that a particular sports venue may have in place. For instance, it might be that your local five-a-side soccer club is more interested in running drills rather than actual games right now, such as with penalty shootouts, dribbling techniques, and more. Martial arts clubs may be training katas and several moves against dummies rather than actual sparring partners now, and that can help keep you limber and be appreciative of the move-sets. Some venues may mark out where they wish you to stand, or what their max capacity is. Be sure to contact them if you’re unsure and that information isn’t readily available. It may help you understand which sports are a good idea to choose from.

With this advice, hopefully you can play sports with Covid in mind, and keep in great shape while doing so. If you enjoyed this article, share with friends below!
