Monday night featured a big NFC showdown with two potential playoff contenders in the Bears and Rams. CHI had surprised a lot of people this season thus far, amassing a 5-1 record entering NFL Week 7 after already making a QB change, while the Rams were adamant on picking up a win to keep up with the rest of a historically good NFC West division. While neither offense was particularly potent, it was the defenses that made the difference for each team as LA won the turnover battle and dominated the Bears all night long for a 24-10 victory that was worse than the score indicated.

  • Rams defense came to play on MNF

  • Punters can be elite too

  • The Bears’ D did their best to cover for their offense

  • Foles’ playmakers did make a couple plays

  • McVay whipped out the quick snap for the TD

1. An elite Punter makes a huge difference in winning games

Often an overlooked aspect of a team’s success is its ability to punt the ball and pin an opponent deep in its own territory. This can make a huge difference when paired with a great defense to stop the opposing offense and force a punt. Winning the field position battle makes it easier for them to put points on the board. This has been the case for the Rams a number of times in the past and was again on MNF as Johnny Hekker was able to pin the Bears offense deep in their own territory, therefore making it much tougher for them to score. This is a major part of their game and when executed correctly can make a huge difference in the final outcome.

2. Brandon Staley made a statement as LA’s rookie Defensive Coordinator

In his first season as the Rams’ DC at just 37 years old, Brandon Staley made a huge statement on MNF when his defense dominated the Bears from start to finish in Week 7. Holding Chicago to just 49 RUSH YDS, the Rams pushed the Bears into a position where they were forced to pass as Nick Foles threw 40 times and had 2 INTs. In addition to having two of the NFL’s best defenders in Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, Staley and his well-coached defense could make this Rams team a legit playoff contender if the offense can perform at steady level. Staley has only been in the NFL for three years, coming from small schools like John Carrol University and JMU, before climbing the NFL ranks as quick as anyone, and proving another quick-riser (Sean McVay) right in giving him the Def. Coordinator job so young in his career.

3. All four NFC West teams could make the playoffs this year

During the offseason, the NFL playoff format was changed to where seven teams from each conference can now qualify for the postseason meaning all four teams from one particular division can make it in. With the way things are going in the NFC West, this possibility could happen sooner than many thought. Albeit an unlikely scenario, it is still very possible. Given the dismal state of the NFC East, Michael Thomas’ health and how it will impact the Saints the rest of the year, and whether the Bears continue to play like they did tonight, NO and CHI could be on the outside looking in if the NFC West can keep winning like they have been so far. The four NFC West teams have a combined .704 win%, the 2nd-highest combined win% for a division through 7 weeks since the 1970 merger.

As they move up to 5-2 on the year, Staley and the Rams’ defense will look to continue beating up on teams with their stout defense in order to keep up with the rest of the NFC West as it’s going to be a tight race to see which teams in that division will make the playoffs with the real albeit unlikely chance all four teams make it to the postseason. It certainly won’t be an easy task though as only two of their remaining opponents likely aren’t going to be playoff contenders (Dolphins and Jets), two are very likely to be in the mix (Bucs and Patriots), and the remaining five games are all against fierce division rivals. The second half of 2020 is going to be incredibly important for the Rams as there is little to no margin for error if they want to play beyond Week 17.

Despite putting up a rather embarrassing performance, the Bears are still 5-2 and very well in the playoff mix as the NFL season approaches the halfway mark. The defense is still among the top-10 units in the league, and like the Rams, can win games on that side of the ball. The offense has to perform better than they did vs. LAR though and establish a more consistent running game to help open up the pass so Nick Foles doesn’t have to throw the ball 40+ times every game as doing so is a recipe for disaster that even a good defense can’t cover for. CHI doesn’t face as daunting of a schedule as LA does the rest of the season, but division matchups will be highly important as well with Green Bay right there on top of the NFC North alongside them.
