The Tennessee Titans have been making national headlines the past couple of weeks as the team seems to have at least one or two positive COVID tests a day which has caused ripple effects across the league. A game that was originally supposed to be played on Sunday ended up getting postponed to Tuesday Night (the second Tuesday Night Football game since 1946) after one of its staff members tested positive for the coronavirus last week, forcing a shutdown of all Titans facilities. After several rounds of testing and no further positives, the matchup between the Bills and Titans proceeded as scheduled.

Despite basically not practicing at all between their last game two weeks ago and tonight, TEN looked like it hasn’t missed a beat and completely dominated the contest 42-16 as BUF was dealt its first loss of the season.  The Titans improve to 4-0 as it was powered by a highly efficient offense in the red zone, an effective Ryan Tannehill, and a forceful defense that generated three turnovers.

  • Derrick Henry is a GROWN MAN and ices the game

  • Tannehill was cookin’ on a Tuesday

  • Butler snags a pair of INTs off Allen

  • Allen fires a laser for a TD

  • Bojorquez did it for the brand

1. Josh Allen’s MVP campaign now closer to down the drain

The Bills were without two key defensive starters tonight and it clearly showed as they were unable to put a stop to just about anything the Titans’ offense threw at them, figuratively and literally. BUF was able to hang in there for a good chunk of the game but couldn’t stop the bleeding later in the second half as their offense led by Josh Allen continued to make one mistake after another. Allen’s turnover-prone nature returned in this game, and that was the one key improvement he showed over the first four games that elevated him into the MVP conversation in the first place.

2. COVID chaos not enough to slow down this Titans team

Positive COVID-19 tests, facilities getting shut down, no practices, impending punishments; the Tennessee Titans have had to deal with ALL of this in a matter of just a couple weeks, and yet, they still look like a team that has not missed a beat. Ryan Tannehill looks more polished than he did in his breakout season a year ago and has given doubters a reason to believe that Derrick Henry doesn’t have to run the ball the entire game every single week if the Titans want a shot at winning. A.J. Brown’s return was certainly welcome, and Jonnu Smith has the look of a TE that can add an extra element to the offense.

3. Tennessee has a legitimate championship-winning formula

When looking at championship-winning teams, they usually have some combination of the following: top-tier coaching, franchise QB, effective run game, dominant defense. The Titans continue to show they have what it takes to make a championship run. They almost pulled it off last season, and they have the same formula this year. Now currently 4-0 and leading the AFC South, TEN has shown it is capable in more than just the running game. The defense was able to create three turnovers against another rising AFC powerhouse and the offense has been incredibly efficient in the red zone. Tennessee ranks fifth in the league in red zone TDs, scoring a TD on 73% of their trips so far. Should they continue that kind of effectiveness and efficiency, Mike Vrabel’s Titans may be looking at another deep playoff run this year.

If the Titans can remain healthy and avoid any more positive COVID tests, they can potentially make a legit run going forward as a dark horse contender once again. This may be a bit of a challenge for them though as they have now already had their BYE week due to all the rescheduling mess that has occurred and now have quite a long road ahead of them. They were able to overcome a lack of practicing though, so maybe they will be able to successfully navigate through a long season ahead without any real time off for the foreseeable future. Derrick Henry will continue to be this team’s centerpiece down the stretch, and as long as he keeps putting up his usual level of production every week, the Titans can keep opposing offenses off the field and do their own damage in the run game.

The Bills may have gotten blown out by the Titans, but this game was not indicative of what Buffalo is as a team. Tre’Davious White and Matt Milano were both inactive tonight and it clearly affected the outcome of the game. Josh Allen had a couple of nice drives and plays that got his team in the end zone, but overall the offense struggled pretty significantly, committing three turnovers which set the Titans up with favorable field position a number of times and led to easy scores. The Bills are still a top contender in the AFC though, and with the return of more of their injured starters, they will be able to get back on track and look to make a statement against the next opponent, the reigning Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football.
