After a handful of positive tests from both teams, all necessary COVID-19 pre-game protocols were cleared on each side and the Green Bay Packers traveled to Santa Clara to face a San Francisco 49ers squad that had a lot more to worry about than just coronavirus absences. One of the key storylines entering this game was that the 49ers would be without ALL seven players that touched the ball on offense in their NFC Championship domination of GB as their injury-riddled season continues. Despite a questionable 5.5-point spread, the Packers expectedly feasted on the 49ers’ injury-plagued defense as they totaled 405 yds on offense en route to a 34-17 beat-down.

Final Results: GB (-260) d. SF (+220) 34-17 [GB -5.5 | o48.5]
  • Adams made a beautiful spinning TD catch

  • MVS left all alone on 52-yd TD bomb

  • JMU alum Greene got 1 of 2 GB TOs

  • Rodgers + Adams = automatic

  • A career game from Richie James

1. Davante Adams has a case for #1 WR in the NFL right now when healthy

For the last few years, when Davante Adams is healthy, there is little opposing defenses can do to stop him. That trend has continued into 2020 as Adams has a league-leading eight REC TD despite only playing in six games so far. It’s no question that he is ultimately the biggest difference-maker on this offense outside of Aaron Rodgers, totaling a whopping 422 REC YDS and 6 TD over the last 3 games. Allen Lazard’s absence during that span certainly contributed to more targets being thrown in Adams’ direction, but regardless he has been the Packers’ greatest asset on passing downs since his explosive 2018 season where he was just one catch short of breaking Sterling Sharpe’s team-record of 112 REC set in 1993. With a rather soft schedule ahead, expect Adams to continue having dominant performances barring any setbacks to his health and solidify his spot as fantasy football’s premier WR1.

2. When all healthy, the Rodgers-Jones-Adams trio is the best in the NFL

So far, the Packers have had to deal with both Davante Adams and Aaron Jones missing time this season which has forced them to come up with special game plans to cover for each of their absences with somewhat mixed results. Now with both players healthy and returning to the lineup, the trio of them plus Aaron Rodgers creates a dynamic that no team can match at the QB-RB-WR positions. With Rodgers and Adams always in sync while Jones slices through defenses, it’s nearly impossible for opposing defensive coordinators to formulate a plan and stop the Packers’ offense. On top of having two elite weapons, Rodgers has no problem spreading the ball around effectively, so double-covering Adams or Jones typically turns out to be rather ineffective since the rest of the GB offense can make plays with A-Rod under center.

3. From a No.2 overall pick to a Super Bowl to a top-10 pick

The 49ers were severely undermanned in yet another week, this time more so than they’ve been all season. Without key starters such as Jimmy Garoppolo, Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and several others, SF expectedly suffered a deflating defeat to GB with the road ahead not looking much easier, going up against the Saints, Rams, and Bills over the next three weeks. If SF can not put together more winning efforts and/or get healthy fast, it may very well be time to start planning for next season when most of the team will return at full health. San Francisco was one of the biggest surprises of 2019, going directly from the No.2 pick to the Super Bowl, thanks to that pick being a Pro Bowl rookie in EDGE Nick Bosa, however, after Bosa’s torn ACL and an abundance of other key injuries this season, SF falls right back into top-10 territory where they’ll add another premium playmaker to a stacked roster (if healthy).

As the Packers continue to get healthier on offense and expect WR Allen Lazard back within the next couple weeks, their schedule moving forward remains favorable, beginning with a home game next week against a mediocre Jaguars team, followed by a road matchup with the Colts and two more contests between CHI and PHI at Lambeau Field. The main concern ahead will be the defense’s health, most notably CB Jaire Alexander, who suffered a concussion against the 49ers but hass over a week to recover.

After seeing what SF would look like with the current lineup of guys they had out there on Thursday night, it’s safe to say that their outlook is quite bleak moving ahead. With an already extensive list of starters on IR, San Francisco also has to deal with Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle both likely out for the season with injuries so expect to see what will basically be the 49ers’ B-team out there for the rest of 2020.

That all being said, it has been a completely different story for each of these teams this season and drastically flipped since last years’ NFC Championship. The Packers once again are a #1 seed contender with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, while the 49ers’ long list of injuries have prevented them from having the same expectations as they will likely finish with a losing record and a top-10 pick in next years’ draft. It’s also possible that SF may move on from their QB as Garoppolo may have thrown his last pass in a Niners uniform with his most important pass being one just a few yards too far.
