1. Jakobi Meyers could be emerging as NE’s WR1
Outside of Julian Edelman, the Patriots’ WR corps is one of the youngest groups in the league and lacks a true WR1. Slot WR Edelman isn’t getting any younger, and with him now back on the injury list after being placed on IR, NE might move on from him soon as his current contract is set to end in 2021. The most likely wideout currently on the roster to take over his spot as the Patriots go-to wide receiver would be Jakobi Meyers, who proved tonight that he is more than capable of such with a breakout performance (12 REC, 169 YDS). While it’s certainly still too early to deem him the Pats’ next star receiver, his potential is promising, especially as a 2019 UDFA.
2. The Jets are locked in on Trevor Lawrence
The New York Jets continued their path towards locking up the 2021 draft’s No. 1 overall pick with a loss on MNF as the only winless team left in the NFL. A huge upset and morale booster looked highly possible for most of the game as NYJ took its lead over NE all the way into the 4th quarter thanks to Joe Flacco’s big night. The organization, however, must’ve realized that barely beating NE in a meaningless MNF game wasn’t worth losing 15+ years of potentially having Trevor Lawrence under center. Considering a despicable 12-men on the field penalty late in the game and questionable play-calling in the fourth quarter, tonight’s loss appeared to be a calculated effort to further their tanking efforts instead of gaining some instant gratification.
3. The Patriots 2020 season is still up in the air
As the New England Patriots begin a new chapter in their storied history, several people are left to wonder what it will behold. It’s unclear what to call NE at this point in its first season post-Brady; on one hand, the team is fresh off two decades of dominance, still has the greatest coach of all-time, a former MVP at QB, and a team that just overcame a 10-pt deficit in the 4th quarter with their backs against the wall. On the other hand, they just lost the greatest QB of all-time, had the most opt outs in the league, “sold out,” have a 3-5 record, and barely beat the worst team in the league. Nobody really knows what to expect from NE right now, so these next few weeks will go a long way in understanding what the Patriots will be in this highly-anticipated new chapter.
