As the 2020 NFL regular season continued to wind down on Sunday, playoff positioning shifted significantly once again. Alvin Kamara had the game of his life on Christmas Day, Miami stunned the Raiders with less than a minute to play to eliminate Vegas from the playoffs on Saturday, and the Steelers completed an epic comeback against the Colts on Sunday. Seattle won the NFC West after a victory over the Rams, Jacksonville clinched the first pick in next year’s draft after the Jets upset another playoff team, and Green Bay made a statement to the rest of the NFL by crushing the Titans on Sunday Night Football.

As of late, the Chiefs’ offense hasn’t quite been in the same groove as it usually is. They’ve broken the NFL record with seven straight wins by six points or under and tied the record for the most comeback wins in a single season (10). Patrick Mahomes is still in the MVP conversation but he certainly hasn’t played to the level fans are accustomed to. Having thrown four interceptions and fumbling three times in the last three games, Mahomes has been fortunate enough to come out on top each time.
While KC has shown it can win without a lights-out performance from Mahomes, the biggest concern is that it happened against the 4-11 Falcons on Sunday. With the defense being far from a total shutout unit and Edwards-Helaire out with an injury, it makes the Chiefs more one-dimensional and gives opposing defenses a better chance knowing KC has a heavier reliance on Mahomes. They deserve the right to be considered the best team in the league, but they’ve proven to be vulnerable at multiple points during this season and far from a lock to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Normally fans of a winless team headed into the final weeks of the season would be elated if said team finally managed to win a couple of games towards the end of the year to avoid the infamous 0-16 record. That isn’t the case for Jets fans however as NY’s second win in a row paired with JAX’s loss on Sunday officially erased any chance of receiving the first overall pick to select generational talent Trevor Lawrence in next year’s draft.
While there are plenty of other solid QBs for NY to choose from, none of them have the same upside as a National Champion who’s only lost a single game in his college career and would have brought a winning pedigree the Jets aren’t accustomed to. With a house cleaning likely coming within the next few weeks or so, it will be interesting to see what the new front office regime will do in April.

This Texans-Bengals game didn’t have any playoff implications but had major NFL draft ripple effects. HOU is now in line for a top-5 pick which will go right to Miami from their Laremy Tunsil trade last year.
