Tuesday night saw a plethora of NBA action with seven games played. A number of individual players stood out, including Steph Curry, who’s ridiculous circus shot against the Spurs was on another level and the highlight of the day. Also, Carmelo Anthony, in his 18th season, continues to move up the all-time scoring leaderboards, while Donovan Mitchell’s huge game against the Celtics helped lift the West-leading Jazz to another win.

Here is the best of the day from February 9, 2021:

Steph Curry somehow got this circus shot to go

Steph Curry continued his MVP form against the Spurs as the Warriors used a dominant second half to earn a resounding 114-91 win in San Antonio. Curry finished with a game-high 32 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the floor and 4-of-10 from 3pt. The highlight of his night, though, came in the first quarter when Curry hit an improbable, behind-the-back, no-look shot when driving in the paint.

When Steph Curry is mentioned, the first thought is shooting, and rightfully so. Curry’s long-range daggers and efficiency from deep revolutionized the game and have made him the greatest 3pt shooter ever. However, no one outside of Kyrie Irving has Curry’s lethal combination of handles and his ability to make ridiculously difficult shots off the glass around the rim. His shooting, handles, and finishing, along with a championship pedigree, is what elevates Steph above every other point guard in the league, including the likes of Irving, Damian Lillard, and Chris Paul.

Curry is in the midst of another all-time season to his illustrious 12-year career. That is an incredible accomplishment for a 3x champion and a back-to-back MVP winner (including the only unanimous winner in NBA history). He is averaging 29.5 PPG, the second highest of his career, while hitting nearly five 3-pointers a night, all while having the Klay Thompson-less Warriors in playoff position. If he continues to light it up and lead Golden State to the playoffs, Curry will undoubtedly be on the shortlist to take home his third MVP award.

Carmelo Anthony deserves more recognition as one of the greatest scorers of all-time

Back in 2003 when Carmelo Anthony first entered the league, there was an ongoing debate whether LeBron James or Melo was going to be the better NBA player. While that discussion evaporated within a few years, it doesn’t take away from the greatness that Carmelo has accomplished himself.

King James is one of, if not the greatest player to ever play the game, and has undoubtedly casted a shadow on Melo’s career due to his own unprecedented success as a 2003 NBA Draft class member. That along with a lack of a championship has suffocated Anthony’s all-time legacy in the eyes of many NBA fans.

Regardless of his team’s success over his 18-year career, nobody can take away his all-time scoring prowess. Tuesday marked the day he officially passed the Big O Oscar Robertson for 12th on the career scoring list, and he’ll likely enter the top-10 by the end of the year. Anthony’s playing style isn’t one that usually leads to Championships as a No.1 option, but as a supporting cast member on Portland, he can bring an offensive punch to the second unit that desperately needs someone who can get their own shot.

It won’t be known how realistic his title aspirations are this season until CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic show their fully healthy by the playoffs, but even if he retires without a ring, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the greatest scorers to ever play the game. Scoring is the most difficult and significant skill to have in the game of basketball and Anthony did it better than almost anyone. Instead of knocking him for what he hasn’t accomplished in his illustrious career, let’s just appreciate all that he has done.
