Chiefs-Bucs win Conference Championships to set up Mahomes vs. Brady Super Bowl
The Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will square off in Super Bowl IV on February 7th. It will be Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes in the QB battle of a lifetime as the two will go head-to-head at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida. Brady and Mahomes have split their four previous matchups. Brady won the lone playoff game between the two in an OT thriller in the 2018 AFC Championship game. The Chiefs and Bucs faced off in the 2020 regular season, a game that saw Kansas City defeat Tampa Bay 27-24 on the road. With the legendary matchup now set, here’s a look at how the teams got to this point.
Tampa Bay:
The Bucs finished the season 11-5 and in second place in the NFC South, earning the fifth seed. They defeated Washington in the Wild Card round, the Saints in the Divisional round, and then upset the top-seeded Packers and likely MVP Aaron Rodgers in the NFC title game. The Bucs took a 28-10 lead on the Packers early in the third quarter before hanging on to win 31-26 after GB HC Matt LaFlauer’s questionable decision to kick a FG instead of attempting to tie the game on 4th & Goal with just over two minutes left. Tampa is now looking to become the fourth team in NFL history to win three road playoff games and the Super Bowl.
Kansas City:
The Chiefs, winners of the AFC West at 14-2, earned the top seed in the conference for the third straight season along with a first round bye. They hung on to beat the Browns in the Divisional round after Mahomes was forced to leave the game due to injury, and then dropped the Bills in the AFC Championship game. After trailing 9-0 early, Kansas City righted the ship and dominated Buffalo behind the trio of Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, and WR Tyreek Hill, outscoring them 38-15 from there en route to a comfortable 38-24 victory. The defending champs are now seeking to be the first team to repeat since Tom Brady’s Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004.
