Payton Pritchard serves as Boston’s hero after Celtics and Heat protest for equality
The Boston Celtics narrowly escaped an epic collapse Wednesday night in their 107-105 win over the Miami Heat. Leading 105-95 with 1:17 left on the clock, Boston had a 98.1 percent chance to win according to the ESPN win probability metric. However, the Celtics couldn’t buy a bucket in the closing minute while the Heat got red-hot, hitting three 3-pointers (including a made and-1) to tie the game 105-105. Just when it seemed like overtime was inevitable, Celtics rookie G Payton Pritchard snuck into the lane, secured Marcus Smart’s missed layup and converted the put-back with 0.2 seconds to win the game for Boston.
The Celtics were able to exact some revenge on the Heat, who eliminated them in the Eastern Conference Finals last season. The status of the game, though, was uncertain before its start after what the nation witnessed as pro-Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building to protest elected officials confirming Joe Biden as President. Both teams left the floor and released a joint-statement prior to tipoff, speaking of racial inequality and the differences in how protestors during the spring and summer were treated versus how the protests were handled by authorities on Wednesday. Most players from both teams took a knee during the National Anthem.
Peaceful protests took place all around the NBA, including in Milwaukee, where the Bucks and Pistons united in protest immediately following tipoff. Both teams kneeled on their first possessions before tossing the ball out of bounds. In Philadelphia, following their 141-136 win over the Wizards, 76ers head coach Doc Rivers commented on the contrast between how Black Lives Matter protestors in D.C. were handled versus how the pro-Trump supporters were dealt with in the nation’s capital. This certainly won’t be the last time that teams, athletes, and coaches will use their enormous platforms to promote social justice and equality for all.
