The reigning AFC Champions released both of their starting Offensive Tackles
The Kansas City Chiefs released both LT Eric Fisher ($12M) and RT Mitchel Schwartz ($6.3M) to save over $18M in cap space for the upcoming season. The moves were necessary for Kansas City, who is projected to be over the $182.5M salary cap. However, they don’t come without questions, as the offensive line will be a major concern heading into 2021.
Both players are coming off injuries, though. Schwartz, a 2018 All-Pro, is considered one of the top RT in the league when healthy. However, the 31-year-old missed 10 games this season, snapping his 7,894 consecutive snaps streak, the longest in the NFL at the time. Meanwhile, Fisher, the 2013 No. 1 overall pick by Kansas City and 2x Pro Bowler, suffered a torn Achilles injury in the AFC Championship Game that forced him out of the Super Bowl as well.
The Chiefs missing both tackles was a major storyline heading into the Super Bowl that came to fruition against Tampa Bay. The Bucs D-line completely dominated the line of scrimmage, continuously harassing Patrick Mahomes, who didn’t show the same level of trust in his depleted O-line as he did with the veterans in there.
Along with Fisher and Schwartz, four other O-lineman are set to be free agents, including starting C Austin Reiter and starting G Kelechi Osemele. The offensive line was already a major concern that prevented the Chiefs from running it back, but now the challenge will be even harder with their two most accomplished OT’s no longer in the fold.
