The latest cap casualties from teams looking to get under the reduced 2021 salary cap came in the form of both Chiefs starting OT’s Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz on Thursday. The lack of continuity along the O-line could really prevent Kansas City from getting back to the mountain top, as witnessed in their Super Bowl loss. Also, the Hawks’ Tony Snell hit a buzzer-beating 3 to knock off Toronto, and Kyrie Irving put on a show to get the dub vs. his old team without two of his star teammates.

Here is the best of the day from March 11, 2021:

The reigning AFC Champions released both of their starting Offensive Tackles

The Kansas City Chiefs released both LT Eric Fisher ($12M) and RT Mitchel Schwartz ($6.3M) to save over $18M in cap space for the upcoming season. The moves were necessary for Kansas City, who is projected to be over the $182.5M salary cap. However, they don’t come without questions, as the offensive line will be a major concern heading into 2021.

Both players are coming off injuries, though. Schwartz, a 2018 All-Pro, is considered one of the top RT in the league when healthy. However, the 31-year-old missed 10 games this season, snapping his 7,894 consecutive snaps streak, the longest in the NFL at the time. Meanwhile, Fisher, the 2013 No. 1 overall pick by Kansas City and 2x Pro Bowler, suffered a torn Achilles injury in the AFC Championship Game that forced him out of the Super Bowl as well.

The Chiefs missing both tackles was a major storyline heading into the Super Bowl that came to fruition against Tampa Bay. The Bucs D-line completely dominated the line of scrimmage, continuously harassing Patrick Mahomes, who didn’t show the same level of trust in his depleted O-line as he did with the veterans in there.

Along with Fisher and Schwartz, four other O-lineman are set to be free agents, including starting C Austin Reiter and starting G Kelechi Osemele. The offensive line was already a major concern that prevented the Chiefs from running it back, but now the challenge will be even harder with their two most accomplished OT’s no longer in the fold.
