Washington released Alex Smith after winning Comeback Player of the Year
The Washington Football Team and quarterback Alex Smith agreed to part ways on Friday. The move saves Washington $14.7M in cap space with an $8.6M dead cap hit, as the 36-year-old was due to count $24.4M against the salary cap in 2021. Smith had two years remaining on his 4y/$94M contract extension that he signed in 2018.
Smith earned Comeback Player of the Year honors after helping lead Washington to an NFC East division title and a playoff berth in 2020 with a 7-9 record. His presence, experience, and leadership were invaluable to a young Washington team this past season. He posted a 5-1 record as a starter with six touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.7 percent of his passes.
Smith struggled to stay healthy last season though, missing multiple games due to injury, which is understandable given what he has gone through. He suffered a broken right fibula and tibia in November 2018 that required 17 surgeries.
It seemed unlikely that he would ever play again after nearly losing his leg due due to a life-threatening infection. However, Smith persevered, and made his first appearance almost two years later in October 2020. During his three years in Washington, Smith went 11-5 as a starter, while every other quarterback combined to go 6-27.
