Russell Westbrook became the all-time leader in career triple-doubles Monday night, passing NBA legend Oscar Robertson. Unfortunately, his historic performance wasn’t enough, as Washington, who was without Bradley Beal, fell to Atlanta by one point. Also, Boston’s playoff hopes will have to be put on hold until next season after they announced Jaylen Brown will miss the remainder of the season due to injury, the Warriors defeated the Jazz thanks to a game-winning 3 from Steph Curry, and PSO ranked the 10 greatest catches in NFL history.
Russell Westbrook passed Oscar Robertson as the all-time triple-double king
Russell Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson‘s all-time record for triple-doubles with the 182nd of his career Monday vs. Atlanta. Westbrook broke the 47-year-old record with just under nine minutes remaining in the game and wound up finishing with 28 points, 21 assists, and 13 rebounds. It wasn’t enough though, as the Wizards fell 125-124 after Westbrook missed the game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Russell Westbrook has 5+ triple-doubles vs 23 teams, by far the most in NBA history. Only two others have done it against 10+ opponents: Magic Johnson (13) & Jason Kidd (12) h/t @EliasSportspic.twitter.com/h7Qr0oEvdd
While the loss will sting, of greater concern for the Wizards is the health of leading-scorer Bradley Beal, who is dealing with a strained left hamstring. Washington already announced he will be sidelined for the teams’ rematch with Atlanta on Wednesday. With D.C. gearing up for the play-in tournament, it could be a fatal blow to their chances of advancing without one half of the best backcourt in the NBA this season.
BOSTON’S PLAYOFF HOPES HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR AFTER JAYLEN BROWN’S INJURY
The Boston Celtics announced on Monday that Jaylen Brown will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ligament in his left wrist. There is currently no timetable for his return, but the organization has already dealt with this procedure this year. Romeo Langford had the same issue in September and wasn’t able to return until five and a half months later. If the same timetable is given for Brown, he can be expected back in late October, which is right around when the next season will begin.
Brown was having a breakout All-Star season for Boston, averaging career-highs in PPG (24.7), APG (3.4), SPG (1.2), BPG (0.6), FG% (48.4), and 3P% (39.7), among other things. He was rewarded with his first All-Star Game and was key for the team’s stretches of success when they had them. Alongside Jayson Tatum, the Young Jay’s were developing into a formidable duo that could put up 50 points between the two of them on any given night and had shown flashes of one day becoming the best duo in Boston history.
This is a huge blow to Boston because they had upset potential in the first round. They are a team that has proven they can win playoff series in recent years with multiple Eastern Conference Finals appearances, while many of the squads at the top of their conference have not. It is a rare season where anything could happen, but without Brown, these hopes of upsetting a team are gone, and even making it out of the play-in tournament could be a challenge as BOS’ playoff hopes will now have to wait until next year.
Brown set many career highs this season in which he made his 1st All-Star appearance. PPG (24.7), APG (3.4), Steals PG (1.2), Blocks PG (0.6), FG pct (48.4) and 3-pt FG pct (39.7).
He had 11 games with at least 30 pts after having just 8 such games in his 1st 4 seasons combined https://t.co/pTBqNo0Ck3
