Another Sunday Night Baseball classic ended with controversy

Sunday Night Baseball continues to churn out classic ballgames, as this time it was the contest between the Mets and Phillies. New York won 8-7 thanks to late defensive miscues by Philadelphia along with a controversial replay reversal. It was back-and-forth throughout, as both teams’ bullpens couldn’t hold on to their teams’ leads.

The Phillies’ Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer that initially tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the 9th after facing a 8-4 deficit to start the bottom half of the inning. However, the game-tying bomb was overturned after replay showed the ball hit the top railing, never clearing the wall, resulting in Hoskins being placed on second. The Mets were able to hang on from there, earning a controversial win over their division rivals after striking out Bryce Harper in the very next at-bat.

This was just the latest in a string of entertaining Sunday night matchups that included the classic Braves-Phillies outing in April as well as last Sunday’s epic matchup that saw the Padres complete a comeback vs. the Dodgers to cap off an exhilarating seven-game regular season NL West series.

DURANT VS. GIANNIS IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MATCHUP IN THE NBA

Milwaukee and Brooklyn squared off on Sunday night, and two of the NBA’s best went at it. Both Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo scored over 40 points in one of the best games of the year. These players are on a mission to establish themselves as the league’s best at the moment, and they showed that when they met head-to-head.

KD is on a mission, and wants to prove that he can win outside a Golden State team who were already proven winners without him, and Giannis is still looking to solidify himself as a champion. Antetokounmpo has won consecutive MVPs, and wants to prove that he is a winner. If the season ended today, these two teams would be set for an epic second-round matchup in the East, where only one of them would be able to accomplish their goals.

A playoff matchup between Giannis and KD has much more implications than just the team that would advance to the next round. Both of them would have the opportunity to show who the best player in the league is right now (with LeBron saying he’ll never be 100% again), and even who the possible best team in the league is. It also has lasting impacts on the future, where they could cement their legacies, or even put themselves higher in the GOAT debate.
