1987: San Antonio Spurs selected future HOF David Robinson with the 1st overall pick in the NBA Draft, but he would not play until 1989 to fulfill his active duty obligation with the Navy. Chicago drafted SF Scottie Pippen 5th overall and the Pacers took SG Reggie Miller with the 11th overall pick

1987: Boston Red Sox SP Tom Seaver retired after 20 years with a career record of 311-205, a 2.86 ERA, and 3,640 strikeouts as a 1st ballot Hall of Famer who remains the Mets all-time leader in numerous categories including Wins (198), SO (2,541), and IP (3,045.2)
