Torii Hunter earned five All-Star appearances throughout his 18-year career, but perhaps his most iconic moment came in his first. The 2002 All-Star Game featured big names like Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Sammy Sosa, and Ichiro Suzuki. Hunter’s defining moment came on the defensive end for the American League side. Batting for the National League was arguably the greatest hitter in MLB history, and holder of the all-time career home runs record, Barry Bonds.
2002 was Bonds’ 11th All-Star appearance. On his first at-bat, he launched a ball into the outfield that would have been a homer if not for an amazing athletic play by Hunter. He jumped to reach over the barrier and snatched the ball out of the air, ending the inning. The two players shared a moment afterward as Bonds ran over and picked up Hunter over his shoulder. The game ended in a tie after a controversial call in the 11th inning but this robbed HR stands as the most memorable incident.
