Here’s what to know about UCONN entering the Tournament:
– PG RJ Cole played for Bob Hurley at St Anthonys High School and now plays for his son Danny at UConn
– This is Hurley’s first tournament appearance with the Huskies since taking over as head coach in 2018
– 6 different players led UConn is scoring for at least 1 game this season
[Highlights] G James Bouknight, SO: 19.0 PPG (45.0% FG | 30% 3P), 1.9 APG, 5.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 0.3 BPG
[Highlights] F Adama Sanogo, FR: 7.5 PPG (56.8% FG | 0.0% 3P), 0.6 APG, 4.8 RPG, 0.5 SPG, 0.6 BPG
[Highlights] G Jalen Gaffney, SO: 5.8 PPG (39.4% FG | 35% 3P), 1.5 APG, 1.5 RPG, 0.7 SPG, 0.1 BP
The Huskies are back in the tournament for the first time since 2016. Danny Hurley’s squad has plenty of depth and is finally healthy at the right time. The Huskies match up very well with their first-round opponent Maryland who has lost 3 of their last four games, two to non-tournament teams.
Connecticut is led by potential lottery pick James Bouknight who scored 19 points per game this year despite being hurt for a large portion of the Big East schedule. 10 Huskies averaged double-digit minutes this season, with the backcourt of Bouknight, R.J Cole, and Tyrese Martin carrying the scoring load.
Since Bouknight’s return, the Huskies won six out of seven before falling in the Big East semifinals to Creighton. Many believe they can make a run deep into the tournament, but one can not pass up the value of taking them to win their first matchup against a lower-seeded and less skilled Maryland team with their ROI potential being very high.
