On August 17, 1990 Chicago White Sox C Carlton Fisk became the all-time home run leader for Catchers (328) and in White Sox history (187) exactly 32 years ago today, making it a great time to look back at all of the remarkable accomplishments and historic achievements he has to his name.

Carlton Fisk was taken fourth overall in the first round of the 1967 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. The 6’3″, 200lb Catcher made his MLB debut in 1969, appearing in only two games before spending the entirety of the 1970 season in the Minors. After being called up for a short stint in 1971, Fisk finally got his time to shine in 1972 and made sure the Red Sox would never send him down again. The former first-rounder made his first All-Star game, finished fourth in AL MVP voting, and became the first unanimous ROY winner in MLB history.

The Vermont native moved to New Hampshire before high school, but was not always committed to baseball. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of New Hampshire after drawing the attention of Boston Celtics owner Walter Brown in HS, where he would play both basketball and baseball for the UNH Wildcats. During his sophomore season, Fisk was drafted by the Red Sox and decided to leave basketball behind to pursue baseball full-time, which seems to be one of the best decisions the HOF Catcher ever made.

MLB’s longest-tenured Catcher became a household name in 1975, with one of the most memorable home runs in baseball’s storied history. Fisk was photographed frantically waving his arms, willing the ball fair to walk-off Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Although the Red Sox lost that series in Game 7, Fisk’s passion and drive for the game were evident, and he brought this attitude through all 24 seasons behind the plate. After 11 years with Boston, Fisk signed a contract with the White Sox where he played out the final 13 years of his career.
