On July 14, 1987 both the AL and NL Rookie of the Year awards were renamed after Jackie Robinson in honor of the 40th anniversary of him breaking the color barrier, making it a great date to look back at all of the remarkable records and historic achievements Jackie has to his name.

Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color barrier in 1947 by signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers, changing the game and society forever as the first African-American to play in the majors since Moses Fleetwood Walker played one season with the Toledo Blue Stockings in 1884. The all-time 2B pioneered modern-day baseball, opening the door for the game fans enjoy today with players joining the league both domestically and internationally from all different backgrounds. Robinson’s contribution to the game of baseball both on and off the field will never be forgotten.

The Georgia native shined in his first season in the majors, winning Rookie of the Year and finishing 5th in MVP voting after tallying 29 stolen bases and a .297 batting average. The 5’11 195-lb 2B had his best statistical season in 1949, tallying 37 stolen bases, the only player that season to eclipse 30 SB, and finished with a .342 batting average on the way to his first and only NL MVP– the first Black player to do so. Robinson’s combination of speed and batting prowess allowed him to flourish in a league that did not entirely accept him at the time.

The Dodgers star went on to make the All-Star game for six straight seasons between 1949-1954 sporting a .300+ batting average in each of those seasons. Just two years before retiring, Robinson finally captured a World Series title, defeating the New York Yankees 4-3 in a best-of-seven series. Robinson officially retired in 1956 after the Dodgers traded him to the New York Giants, refusing to play for a rival team. #42’s legacy will always be cemented into baseball, and he will always be remembered as one of the most influential people in American history.

Jackie Robinson is largely remembered for what he did beyond the lines, but here are the greatest records he broke in the game:
