After the Washington Nationals retired #11 for Ryan Zimmerman in DC, there is no better time to look at all of the historic accomplishments and greatest records he earned as the Nats GOAT.

Ryan Zimmerman was drafted fourth overall in the 2005 MLB Draft, as the first draft pick of the newly established Washington Nationals. Zimmerman wasted no time climbing to the majors, making his MLB debut in September 2005 at 20 years old. The long-time 1B and 3B would find his rhythm in 2006, tallying 176 hits, 110 runs batted in, and 20 home runs. Although “Zim” had a phenomenal rookie season, he would finish second in NL ROY voting in 2006 to Hanley Ramirez by only four points in one of the closest ROY races of all-time.

The Virginia native stayed close to home after high school, attending The University of Virginia where he would re-write the UVA record book during his three seasons with the program. After being drafted, Zimmerman would move less than a hundred miles north to Washington D.C. for the inaugural season of the Washington Nationals, re-located and re-named from the Montreal Expos. Dubbed “Mr. National” by fans, Zimmerman would go on to spend all 16 seasons of his MLB career with DC, making many unforgettable moments for Nats fans.

Zimmerman’s long career was highlighted by the Nationals’ 2019 World Series run, where he launched a home run in his first ever at-bat in the Fall Classic. Washington found themselves down 3-2 in the series to the Houston Astros, but they managed to close out Game 6 and Game 7 on the road with great performances from Patrick Corbin and fellow Nationals GOAT SP and World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg. No moment was too big for “Mr. Walk-Off”, and #11 will always be cherished by Washington as it’s forever cemented in the Nation’s Capital.
