Cal Ripken Jr. was drafted by his hometown Baltimore Orioles in the 2nd round of the 1978 MLB Draft, making his major league debut in 1981 as a third baseman. The following year, the 19x All-Star was moved to shortstop, where he spent the majority of his 21 years with the Orioles. Known for his extraordinary consistency and dependability, Ripken will go down as the most reliable player in MLB history with the facts and records to prove it.

CAL RIPKEN JR. WAS THE MOST RELIABLE MLB PLAYER EVER

Throughout his 21 years playing in the MLB, all of them with the Baltimore Orioles, Cal Ripken Jr. amassed a number of impressive achievements. He started off his career strong by being named AL Rookie of the Year in 1982 and helping the Orioles to a World Series title in 1983. As a rare offensively skilled shortstop, Cal Jr. was incredibly talented on both sides of the ball, winning eight Silver Slugger awards and two Gold Gloves.

Despite all of these accomplishments, the 2x AL MVP’s durability was his most distinguishable trait. Ripken Jr. holds the MLB record for the most consecutive games played with 2,632, surpassing the legendary Lou Gehrig’s previous mark by over 500 games and setting a new standard that will likely never come close to being broken. He certainly earned his nickname “The Iron Man” and has cemented his status as the most dependable player in the history of baseball by not only staying on the field but excelling while on it.
