SIGNIFICANCE: Bo gave up his NFL future to play pro baseball

Two-sport athletes aren’t prevalent in today’s era of professional sports. While Kyler Murray was a top-10 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft and first overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, he ultimately chose to play strictly football. However, older sports fans remember the 1985 Heisman Bo Jackson being drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but instead deciding to play professional baseball.

Exactly 34 years ago, Bo Jackson spurned the Bucs and signed with the Kansas City Royals for roughly $600,000. Best known for his blazing speed, Bo enjoyed a solid 8-year MLB career hitting .250 with 141 HRs and 82 thefts in 694 games. He managed to make the 1989 All-Star game where he also was named the game’s MVP. In 1987, Jackson signed with the Oakland Raiders and played with them for the following four years. The 1x Pro Bowler averaged 5.4 YPC on 515 rushes in his 38-game tenure in the NFL. He was the epitome of a multi-sport professional athlete until a disastrous hip injury (the same one Tua recently suffered) shortened his career.
