Bob Cousy was originally drafted fourth overall by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, but was unenthusiastic about playing in the Midwest and demanded a high salary. He was then picked up by the Chicago Stags, but the Stags folded and as a response, the NBA commissioner had a draft of the top two players on the team: Andy Phillip, and Cousy.

The Celtics did not want Cousy and were very disappointed when they drafted him, hoping to land Phillips instead. Cousy quickly proved the Celtics ownership wrong as he became an All-Star his rookie season averaging 15.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, and 4.9 APG. Cousy never looked back and went to 12 consecutive All-Star games, leading the league in AST for eight straight years, while also averaging nearly 20 PPG every season, proving to be one of the best players in the league each and every year.

Bob Cousy won the 1956-57 NBA MVP award and a total of six NBA Championships with the Boston Celtics before retiring after 13 years in the league. During Cousy’s first year as head coach of the Cincinnati Royals, at age 41, he reactivated himself and played seven games that season as a player-coach but his playing career will be remembered for his time in Boston as the franchise’s all-time leading passer.

BOB COUSY IS THE GREATEST POINT GUARD IN BOSTON CELTICS HISTORY

The Celtics have a long history of winning in the NBA and Bob Cousy was a big part of that winning legacy, having been there for their first six NBA championships. That includes five straight championships from 1959-1963, where Cousy led the league in APG twice, and played at least 30 MPG in every playoff series during that run.

Cousy was an unstoppable force who is undoubtedly one of the best players in Celtics history, and without question the best Point Guard the franchise has ever seen. Bill Russell gets plenty of credit for their dominant dynasty during the 1960’s but it wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for players like Cousy or John Havlicek. Cousy recorded more AST during his 13 years in Boston than any player in the storied franchise’s history, cementing himself as the team’s greatest PG ever.
