The Detroit Lions gave Dan Campbell the Head Coaching position, but their defense still looks inadequate on the field. The loss of 2020 first round pick Jeff Okudah for the second time in as many years could lead to disastrous results for the defense and now they’re releasing one of their most proven Veteran players as well. The Lions are rebuilding, and while they were not expected to contend, Campbell was brought in to improve the culture. However, Detroit’s defense has looked just as bad as last year so far.

DETROIT LIONS STILL HAVE THE NFL’S WORST DEFENSE, EVEN WITH HC DAN CAMPBELL

COLORS KEY | FULL LIONS OUTLOOK

The Detroit Lions continue to field one of the worst defenses in the NFL, however, they have a few solid contributors in Defensive End Trey Flowers and Safety Will Harris. Cornerback Jeff Okudah was supposed to be another stalwart on that side of the ball after getting selected third overall but suffered a ruptured Achilles. The Lions will still have a chance to completely replenish their defense in the offseason, despite two consecutive down seasons.

The Lions’ defense does not have many defensive playmakers currently, especially after releasing Linebacker Jamie Collins. If the Lions follow a model to restructure their defense, it could go along the lines of the Miami Dolphins, who transformed a bottom-tier unit into a respectable group led by Cornerback Xavien Howard and FA addition Byron Jones. Detroit is far from contention, but if they draft well in the offseason and make a few quality signings, they could quickly turn things around.
