There were seven key matchups on Thursday night, and it led to some shake ups within the Western Conference standings. Dallas got a clutch home win over Brooklyn despite 45 points from Kyrie Irving, and moved up to fifth. The battle of LA was a one-sided fight, as the Clips secured the dub to move into third and the Lake show fell to sixth. Golden State’s win over OKC moved them ahead of Memphis to claim the eighth spot after the Grizzlies’ loss to Detroit.

The closest contest of the night was an Eastern Conference matchup between Washington and Toronto, where DC came out victorious in overtime behind a 13-17-17 triple-double from Russell Westbrook, despite a huge 44-point outing from Pascal Siakam. Indiana defeated Atlanta and Charlotte lost to Chicago, which closed the 8-9 gap between the Pacers and Hornets to only one game.

NBA TOP PERFORMERS

KYLE KUZMA IS PROVING TO BE THE THIRD PIECE LA NEEDS

The Los Angeles Lakers are the reigning NBA champions but have not had quite the success they were hoping for this season. A large reason for this was the injuries to Anthony Davis and LeBron James. With these two missing time, there have been more opportunities for other players to step up and showcase their skills. One player who has taken great advantage of this is Kyle Kuzma.

The fourth-year forward from the University of Utah has shown recently that he can be a key player on this team, and is able to pick up some of the slack if their two All-Stars are having an off night. He had an immediate impact when he came into the league as a rookie, and is now reminding fans why he was regarded so highly. His performances are going to be key for the Lake show through the playoffs.

Although currently sitting at sixth in the Western Conference, LA still has the second-best odds to win the championship according to Vegas. They are behind only the Brooklyn Nets, who have three certified star players. In order to compete with them, LA likely needs a third key piece themselves, and Kuzma is looking like he can fit the part. A good postseason from him will really help the Lakers in their title defense, and he has shown signs that he’ll be ready for the challenge.
