Jorge Posada was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 24th round of the 1990 MLB Draft, originally as an infielder. After a couple years in the minors, he transitioned to playing Catcher because the Yankees believed he lacked the speed to be an effective infielder. Posada made his major league debut with New York as a full-time catcher in 1995, the same year that fellow Core Four members Derek JeterMariano Rivera, and Andy Pettitte made their professional debuts.

The Puerto Rico native had an illustrious 17-year career in the Bronx, earning five All-Star selections and five Silver Slugger Awards. He also played a key role in winning four World Series titles with New York, including three straight from 1998 to 2000. Although his performance began to decline and he eventually retired following the 2011 postseason, Posada has etched his name in Yankees history as one of the greatest catchers to ever don the pinstripes.

JORGE POSADA WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST YANKEES CATCHERS EVER

Jorge Posada had quite the catching career for a player who wasn’t even supposed to play that position. Though his defensive skills weren’t that stellar, he made a name for himself as one of the top hitting catchers in baseball because he was a switch hitter. This rare ability to hit from both sides of the plate helped catapult Posada up the Yankees all-time rankings for catchers, as he now sits in the top 3 for most major hitting categories.

Being named alongside Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Andy Pettitte as a member of the Core Four is no small feat; this recognition is a testament to the Puerto Rico native’s longevity and consistency in New York’s lineup. While there have certainly been a number of elite catchers in Yankees history, most notably HOFer Yogi Berra, Posada has cemented his status as one of the greatest.
