After disappointing seasons from both the Giants and Steelers in 2019, both teams enter the new season with some optimism as New York has a new HC in place and Pittsburgh has Big Ben back at QB. Tennessee and Denver are both bringing more continuity into 2020 which has proven to be a major x-factor during Week 1 games. Saquon & Derrick Henry had some big plays while rookie WRs Chase Claypool and Jerry Jeudy got in on the action as well.

When the NFL action got started for the first Monday Night Football game ever played without fans, it was a rough start for the “road” team as Diontae Johnson muffed the punt, giving New York a great opportunity to take an early lead. Because Pitt’s defense is so good, they were able to hold NYG to just three points and proved that this kind of mistake wasn’t a sign of things to come.

The story of the game in the Titans-Broncos matchup was the atrocious performance of Stephen Gostkowski, who left ten points on the board but came through when it mattered most by delivering his first FGM since joining Tennessee that essentially clinched their Week 1 victory.

Arguably the best RB in the NFL, Saquon Barkley struggled to get much going against one of the best run defenses in the league as he only mustered six rushing yards on 15 carries, and the Steelers tackled him for a loss on over 50% of his rushes. However, he thrived in the passing game by finding open space where he showed why he’s so special.

Having undergone season-ending elbow surgery after Week 2 in 2019, nobody knew exactly what to expect from the 2x Super Bowl champion this year. Roethlisberger looked like his old self though, as he made a few poor throws/decisions, but made up for it with some great plays like this TD thrown from his back foot below.

‘Danny Dimes’ has become a popular nickname for the Giants first Opening Day signal-caller not named Eli Manning since 2004. The second-year sixth overall pick is looking to make the jump this season and has as good of a ceiling as any young QB when he makes throws like this. Now, he just needs to work on his consistency and decision-making (as seen in the section below).

In both games on MNF, offenses got their teams in scoring position within the 5-yard line only to come up short as the Steelers and Titans defenses came up big to force game-changing turnovers. Uncoincidentally, those two teams walked out of Week 1 victorious.

Jerry Jeudy was arguably the greatest WR prospect in this 2020 draft class while Chase Claypool has arguably the best physical traits of any rookie wideout. Jeudy’s elite elusiveness and Claypool’s captivating size-speed combo came into play during their first NFL games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers showed mental toughness throughout this game, a signature to Mike Tomlin-coached teams. That presence never became more clear than on this fantastic play by James Washington who refused to go down until he punched it in for six.

The Giants-Steelers game featured the two more popular teams on MNF but the Broncos-Titans showcased a closely fought battle that came down to a game-winning FG. All these defenses looked great besides New York, while only Pittsburgh’s offense behind Big Ben put together an impressive performance.
