Historical sports games that occurred on August 25th have achieved levels that have yet to be replicated. Nearly a century ago today, the highest scoring professional baseball game of all time took place leaving fans of the game with a match that remains immortal. More recently, an MLB team secured the milestone of the most HRs ever hit in the span of a month. Events like these that occurred on this day in sports history continue to generate interest to fans of the game today.

Highest-Scoring MLB Game

YEAR: 1922

SIGNIFICANCE: Cubs beat the Phillies 26-23, the highest-scoring game in MLB history

98 years ago, Cubs Park was the host to the highest-scoring ballgame in baseball history. The Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 26-23 in front of 7,000 fans. The combined 49 runs are a Major League record, as well as the 51 hits that were recorded. The Cubs scored in bunches, with a 10-run second inning and a 14-run fourth inning. The Phillies reacted late by scoring 14 runs in their last two innings, which made the Cubs start biting their nails after a 26-9 game shrunk to just a three run lead. Perhaps the most surprising fact of this game is that it only lasted three hours.

Yanks Break August HR Record

YEAR: 2019

SIGNIFICANCE: Yankees hit a record 59th HR in the month of August with 5 days to spare

The 2019 New York Yankees had a weird, yet very successful year. Despite losing their big sluggers for most of the season, they still managed to maintain their high-power numbers as if nothing ever happened. This was most apparent during the month of August, when they broke the all-time record for most Home Runs hit in a calendar month. Yankees 2B DJ LeMahieu hit Clayton Kershaw‘s third pitch of the game into the bleachers of Dodger Stadium. With five days left in the month of August, the Yankees would go on to hit 15 more Home Runs to set the new August record at 74.

2 No-hitters, Same Month

YEAR: 1967

SIGNIFICANCE: Twins SP Dean Chance threw his 2nd no-hitter of the month

On this day in 1967, Minnesota Twins SP Dean Chance threw his second no-hitter of the season, in the same month. Chance pitched a no-no back in August 6th against the Boston Red Sox in a five-inning shortened game. Three starts later, the 1964 Cy Young winner would throw another, that time lasting the full nine innings. Chance walked five Indians and allowed one run, which at the time became only the 20th time ever a run was allowed in a no-hitter.

Gooden's 20th Win

YEAR: 1985

SIGNIFICANCE: Dwight Gooden became the youngest pitcher in MLB history to win 20 games

On this day in 1985, New York Mets phenom Dwight Gooden won his 20th game at 20 years and 9 months old, making him the youngest 20-game winner ever. Gooden was a year removed from his ROY-winning season, and would eventually win the NL Cy Young award in 1985. He would go on to finish the season with a record of 24-5 and a minuscule ERA of 1.53. Gooden led the Majors in Wins, ERA, ERA+, Strikeouts, and FIP that season; showing that he wasn’t simply lucky, he absolutely dominated the sport that year as a young phenom en route to one of the greatest pitching seasons of all-time.

LeVert's Bday Bonus

YEAR: 2019

SIGNIFICANCE: The Brooklyn Nets signed G Caris LeVert to a 3-year extension on the same day as his 25th birthday

Exactly one year ago today, two parties benefited significantly from an NBA transaction. G Caris LeVert enjoyed a nice 25th birthday present in the form of a $52.5M contract extension with the Brooklyn Nets. In his fourth season with Brooklyn, LeVert has proven to be a problem for NBA defenses with his insanely quick first step and playmaking ability. Averaging nearly 19 points a game this season and putting up 35 points in the final game of the Nets playoff run, LeVert is a great third piece behind Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn’s future outlook.
