YEAR: 1985
SIGNIFICANCE: Dwight Gooden became the youngest pitcher in MLB history to win 20 games
On this day in 1985, New York Mets phenom Dwight Gooden won his 20th game at 20 years and 9 months old, making him the youngest 20-game winner ever. Gooden was a year removed from his ROY-winning season, and would eventually win the NL Cy Young award in 1985. He would go on to finish the season with a record of 24-5 and a minuscule ERA of 1.53. Gooden led the Majors in Wins, ERA, ERA+, Strikeouts, and FIP that season; showing that he wasn’t simply lucky, he absolutely dominated the sport that year as a young phenom en route to one of the greatest pitching seasons of all-time.
