A unique 2020 NFL season came to a close with the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The QB matchup of Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady drew a lot of hype in two weeks, but unsuspectedly failed to live up to it. The Chiefs struggled to find the end zone the entire night against the Bucs’ stout defense led by defensive mastermind Todd Bowles, and Brady did what he does best in Super Bowls: make winning them look way too easy. TB returned to glory with a 31-9 victory, capturing its first title in 18 years while Brady earned his 7th ring, now having more than any single franchise in the NFL.

NFL TOP PERFORMERS

1. To be the G.O.A.T., you have to beat the G.O.A.T.

Many have discussed in the last couple weeks how a win over the Bucs on Sunday could help Patrick Mahomes in his journey to pass Tom Brady as the G.O.A.T. Unfortunately for Mahomes, that did not happen and likely never will. Now nearly impossible for this scenario to eventually manifest, Mahomes did all he could and could’ve won if the team around him played better. However, at the end of the day, the QB gets the most credit when a team wins and the most blame when a team loses even though football is a team sport that collectively takes 22+ players to ultimately win.

2. The real MVP of the Super Bowl was Todd Bowles

Tom Brady might have formally won the award for MVP of Super Bowl LV, but it’s impossible to ignore the incredible job that Bucs DC Todd Bowles did on the NFL’s biggest stage. His defense was the key to their victory hands down as they slammed the brakes on one of the NFL’s most dangerous offenses and kept them out of the end zone, an accomplishment no team has earned since Mahomes became a starter. After leading this defense to eight straight wins as well as three consecutive road playoff victories and finally handing the NFL’s Superman his kryptonite, this feat can not go unnoticed and should warrant HC consideration soon.

3. Chiefs Receivers and Offensive Line let Mahomes down

The Chiefs struggled all night to push the ball downfield both through the air and on the ground, highly contrary to what they’re accustomed to. While every single receiver on KC ultimately let Mahomes down with several dropped passes, perhaps the major caveat in this game was the fact that KC’s offensive line was banged up right before the big game.

Losing LT Eric Fisher in the AFC Championship game to a torn Achilles forced the team to make major adjustments at the worst time possible and created a huge challenge when several lineman were tasked to play different positions to cover for Fisher’s absence. It led to the most pressures in Super Bowl history, forcing Mahomes to try to make something happen while running for his life.

COLORS KEY | FULL BUCCANEERS FUTURE OUTLOOK

The Buccaneers are in a solid position to continue making Super Bowl runs over the next couple of seasons, especially if Tom Brady chooses to stay there at least a few more years. Tampa Bay is one of the most complete teams in the NFL, with a huge arsenal of weapons on offense and an outstanding young defense. Even if they lose a player or two, the Bucs are in good shape to continue chasing Lombardi Trophies if they can maintain the majority of their core as long as TB12 is leading the way.

Despite suffering a tough loss, the Kansas City Chiefs are far from being dethroned in the AFC. Few teams have been able to show they can stop Patrick Mahomes, and Andy Reid has proven he can adjust his game planning when needed more often than not. This game was certainly a learning experience for the entire team, one it quite literally has never faced before as it was their first loss in the Mahomes era by more than a single possession. They’ll likely look to draft for depth in April and will very likely be right back in a similar position they’ve been in the last three seasons with another deep playoff run.
