MLB pitchers are given the herculean task of hurling balls up to and over 100 miles per hour with pinpoint accuracy. In the span of an average baseball game, this must be done between 200-300 times. The effort required in pitching produces a tremendous strain on the pitcher, hence the importance of the bullpen. On occasion, a combination of luck and skill allows the bullpen a lighter load. Greg Maddux routinely exhibited such occasions which were coined “A Maddux” to represent throwing a complete game in under 100 pitches.

Against his former team, Greg Maddux faced just 31 batters on the afternoon, striking out six and allowing only one runner to cross home plate. En route to Atlanta’s seemingly effortless 4-1 victory, Maddux threw just 76 pitches to allow Wrigley Field fans to exit the ballpark swiftly after about two hours and seven minutes of gameplay (average time per nine-inning game was about three hours). The HOFer and his incredibly accurate circle changeup were enshrined in Cooperstown in the class of 2016.
